I thought I make a list of games that run on Vista, don't run on Vista or games that run with some set-up tweaks. The games listed below (initially) are ones I've tested on my PC - some games may work for some with no problem and not for others (driver issues etc.) - we'll add those to category 2: Games that run on Vista (tweaks required). Future patches and/or driver updates may get them moved to category 1.

NOTE: some games will require you upgrade your StarForce protection drivers. You can get updated Vista drivers from www.star-force.com

·         Arcanum Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura

Compatibility and Admin rights mode should solve any start-up issues

·         FarCry

I had to patch to 1.4. Couldn’t see a thing. Probably has better support for newer video cards.

·         Flatout 2

Patch to 1.2

·         Gothic

Intro movies do not appear to work but the game seams fine. Would also suggest upgrading to 1.08k

·         Gothic II

Run as Administrator

·         Monopoly: New Edition

Requires compatibility settings to work

·         Oblivion

On my system I had to set bMusicEnabled=0 in the Oblivion.ini to get the game to work. Basically this leaves me with no music. I suspect the issue is driver related and hopefully will be resolved in future.

Updated sound drivers and patch 1.2 appears to have fixed bMusic issue. Woot!

·         Sacred Plus

This game gave me a BSOD. To fix this I patched to latest version and set all .exe files in root of Sacred folder to XP compatibility, Disable Visual themes, disable Desktop composition and run as administrator.

·         Scrabble 2005 Edition

Patch to 1.2. Set Compatibility options and check video settings match your card type.

·         Tomb Raider: Legend

Patch to 1.2. I couldn’t use Next Gen Content – caused game to crash – most likely cause video driver issue.

·         Trackmania Nations

The launcher will allow you to check for updates and change settings but it fails to run the game. I created a shortcut to TmNationsESWC.exe and run the game from that.

·         Trackmania Sunrise

The launcher will allow you to check for updates and change settings but it fails to run the game. I created a shortcut to TmSunrise.exe and run the game from that.

·         Worms Armageddon

Needs to be patched to beta 3.5 and beyond. Needs also to be run in compatibility mode to fix colour issues. Game speed a little screwy – probably drivers

·         Worms World Party

Need to be run in compatibility mode to fix colour issues

3)   Games that do not run on Vista

·         Fahrenheit

Wizard exits early. Atari say they are working on a solution (wouldn’t hold my breath, personally)

·         Medieval Lords

Keeps asking for you to update drivers and reboot.

·         Morrowind

Despite some people claiming it works under Vista, I could not get the game running at all. I suspect it comes down to drivers. However, having spent the best part of an hour trying I’ve given up.

·         Need For Speed: Carbon [Demo] (EA Link)

Can’t get this to run

·         Shadow of Memories

Tries installing DX8 and errors on ‘missing’ temp file

·         Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 (EA Link)

Can’t get this to run

·         The Moment Of Silence

·         According to the MoS website this game works under Vista, but I’m getting StarForce errors indicating wrong OS. Will move this if a solution is found (German users can download a patch, apparently)

·         Trackmania Original

Wrong OS error even with Compatibility mode

¹ At the moment I get video driver crashes but the system recovers. Alt-tabbing fixes this and the game continues with no problems

² Could be an issue with my G5 software but I have to sometimes crash out the game by Ctrl+Alt+Del to get the mouse to work.
